#BodaciousSpacePirates ep10: the race for the ghost ship is officially on! #anime

Marika is starting to scare me.  You can see the pirate captain transformation happening right before your eyes.  It’s pretty awesome actually.

I was caught a little off-guard this episode because I’m a bit behind on the show right now.  Sorry, got Mass Effect 3 the other week and I was completely pre-occupied until now.  So you’ll have to forgive me if when I started this episode I was completely confused to see Chiaki rocking the Bentenmaru captain’s uniform and calling herself Marika.  I had forgotten that there was a planned deception to make the world think that Princess Serenity was with the yacht club and that the Bentenmaru was up to its usual amount of piracy.

Gotta say, Chiaki looked very natural in the role.  And she has an awesome oujo-sama laugh to accompany that role.

As for the actual Bentenmaru, they were well within a region of stormy space (sorry that’s the best I can describe it), chasing that ghost ship. It lives up to its name. It’s hard to find, moves quickly, and disappears into the storm just as quickly.  The Bentenmaru lost it initially, but it wasn’t a complete failure.  They got valuable intel.  Some of that intel was the knowledge that the Serenity navy was out in force, apparently searching for the ghost ship as well.  This is where Marika really shined.  She quickly decided on the bold tactic of attacking the nearest, and smallest group of enemies head on and skirting them, damaging their ships as they passed through.

Pretty ballsy.

For some reason Princess Serenity felt like she needed to protect the ship and talk to the Serenity navy vessels they just passed.  But Marika kept a cool head and told her to wait for the right time.

Given what was seen in the previews for the next episode, things are about to get quite complicated. I’m looking forward to it.  The show is giving me some Outlaw Star flashbacks.  And I’m finally starting to get some excitement from the action and piracy itself.  A good trend that I hope continues.

For the record there hasn’t ever been any ‘piracy’ in this show… and I doubt there ever will be. ‘Mouretsu Pirates’ actually breaks the fourth wall! It refers to us, the truly bodacious pirates!

    Or maybe just me. 😥

I suppose that is true. Not when the people are just immediately being compensated for their “loss”.

That said, even if they weren’t compensated, the pirates taking their belongings is simply the same as any ol’ entertainment industry taking our money, in exchange for, well, entertainment. I doubt they could’ve taken much of their possessions, anyways; I mean, entertainment is about the adrenaline rush, not looking on in boredom as pirates slowly make their way through the 1,000 passengers on the luxury cruise liner, picking their way meticulously through the belongings of each one…

(In fact, since there wasn’t actually a scene showing the pirates taking their belongings, I think the people actually just throw money and jewelry at the pirates. An admission by donation, if you will.)
