Check-in Station: Ao Haru Ride ep1 (now’s not a good time)

What a cute show.  I immediately knew I was dealing with one of those standard awkward shoujo romance shows.  From jump, all the tells were there, and the set-up seemed really familiar.  Girl and guy clearly care for each other, but circumstances and real life bullsh*t keep them apart.  Futaba is a girl who had looks and personality going for her in middle school, but was ostracized by her fellow female students because of those traits and the attention she got from boys.  The saving grace from that life of loneliness was the budding romance she was having with a boy named Kou Tanaka.  But because of crap that happened that we probably won’t learn anything about until the last episode, they never got together or saw each other again – until three years later. #SukitteIinayo ep1: there is no police in anime.

Or the title could be “Nothing begins until you’re ready.  Because I haven’t been ready to write a damn blog post in forever.

A friend recommended this show to me when I was griping about all the anime I was missing out on during the Fall run, and how I couldn’t keep up with anyone’s conversations on anything anymore.  Shoujo, fluffy, pillowy stuff like this generally doesn’t get my attention, but there are exceptions.  Kimi ni Todoke being a recent example.  And even though Muv-Luv seems to be the only thing that has been able to convince me to watch it during this buys winter, I’m gonna try and branch out again.  Maybe I’ll even finish a damn series or two. Kimi ni Todoke S2 ep2: “Love is all about timing.” And yours is terrible! Just terrible!

While episode two started around Valentine’s Day, episode two skips us ahead to April, the beginning of Sawako’s sophomore session of school. And true to standard anime form, most everyone has been kept together. Seeing as how Pin is the homeroom teacher, it can’t be a coincidence. What does appear to be a coincidence, or providence, may be the appearance of that blonde guy who found Sawako so interesting last episode, Kento. Kento Miura. And as I said before, I hope this is the start of a beautiful rivalry. The atmosphere of this show is great, but it could always use a good kick in the pants.

There’s not much to say for this episode in total.  Kimi ni Todoke has always been a leisurely paced show. And in the end this episode can be summed up with Kento’s obvious interest with Sawako.  Shota’s obvious notice of his obvious noticing of Sawako.  Shota’s obvious attempts to step up his game and patch up the communication gap with Sawako after school.  And Sawako obviously choking under the slightest pressure… obviously.  Oh and by the way, Kento seeing Shota leave the room with Sawako still in it and putting their obvious chemistry together.  But this obviously isn’t going to be handled quickly.

Though it pains me to see Sawako fudge up every opportunity to progress socially, it does give us a chance to hopefully see Shota progress as a character that can be more interesting, and hopefully less perfect.

Kimi ni Todoke Season 2 ep1: it’s too simple to not be complicated.

To say my picking up so season two of Kimi ni Todoke is overdue, is an understatement.  It was easily one of my favorite shows when it aired in 2009; and this continuation didn’t take long to follow up.  But I have no regrets.  Now is as good a time as any to soak up the joy of a quaint, cute, deliberately paced series like Kimi ni Todoke.  Besides, there are some unanswered questions that I would greatly appreciate getting answers to. #Symphogear ep9: did I change, or did someone change me? #anime

I’ve been more than a little behind on Symphogear, but I refuse to let it slip into the purgatory of unfinished series.  It’s been too entertaining up until this point.  So here I am picking back up this series right as the Spring season is ending.  I hope I didn’t forget too much during this one month intermission.
