Check-in Station Year in Review: Winter 2013 (the Warmth of Companionship – and Subpar Anime)

January 2, 2014 2 comments

With my Christmas post, I’ve already started my recap series for the year that I’ve dubbed End of Year Faffery.  My love of  British culture, and love the phrase “faffing about” is the inspiration behind this.  But don’t get the wrong idea.  Though I’m playing with concepts, presentation and ideas all the time on this blog; I’m seriously going through this blogs journey in anime throughout the entire year of 2013.  And I’m of course starting with the first season of the year, the Winter season.  After all, this blog is named the Check-in Station. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to not not check-in at the end of the year with everything I’ve discovered, and experienced in world of anime.  Please enjoy, as I take on my journey through the year of anime, 2013. Check-in Station: Kamisama Dolls eps1-5 (child soldiers are never a good idea)

Man, these episodes are getting really good. I thought the fight between Utao and her doppelganger would stop once Kyohei ran into them. But was I ever wrong! Holy sh*t! Not only did it not stop, it escalated into something ridiculous. I wanted to reach through the screen and slap Utao because she really, honestly started this crap. She has a TERRIBLE time controlling herself! The dolls ended up fighting in the sky; in public streets; in front of hordes of people! GEEZUS! Read more…

#KamisamaDolls ep4: things just got really creepy. #anime

So why is an exact copy of Utao running around with her own doll? And
why is she so gotdamn creepy?

Interesting turn of events, seems like the stuff between rival clans
is popping up in earnest now. The assassins were sent from the Hyuga
clan, but they aren’t necessarily assassins. Aki was actually
welcomed into their group, but he’s too hung up on his freedom to
sacrifice it for a group activity and safety.

Kuuko is a giant idiot. She thought she kidnapped someone who could
give her answers, but honestly she’s just inviting death into her
home. And now it looks like she’s stuck with him. I don’t know if
she’s determined to be famous, or dead.

And Aki, I can’t really determine his goal either. It’s like he’s
inviting Kyohei to join him on the run. Or he’s just dying to fight
him again. His words are even enough this time to send Kyohei into a
fury. I must say, it’s interesting to see this guy who’s always
acting so shy and wishy~washy, turn into Mr. Ground & Pound. I’m
placing him just below Aki and Kuuko in the “screwed up” department.

I’m interested. I really am at this point. On one hand the slowness
and goofiness of the show at times puts me off. But it shows
potential to be really dark.

Kamisama Dolls ep1: it’s not set in a high school? There are adults and people get murdered? OK, I’m in!

I’m down for a good twisted story every now and again, and some more later.  It adds an appropriate measure of tension and finality to the episodes.  And despite a few cutesy things here and there.  The narrative seems relatively serious and straightforward.  Albeit, this first episode still goes through the usual first episode trappings and annoyances of vague disposition and dialogue throughout, sprinkled heavily with foreshadowing and metaphor.  But I’m quickly, and comfortably settling into the world of Kamisama Dolls.
