Maoyuu Maou Yuusha ep10: reverberations

Episode 9

After the explosion of emotion that was episode 9 of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, you just knew there had to be some consequences. There are positive and negative side effects to declaring your overseers pompous greedy slave owners. The positives seems to be a renewed spirit in the populace, and a chance at living up to high ideals. The negative is of course being wiped off the face of the Earth. Read more…

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha ep9: you are nothing before a powerless insect

Episode 8

If a plan goes wrong, it should go spectacularly wrong! For if it doesn’t, what’s the point? And at the very least, the spectacle can erase the sin of your mistake.

Yeah, this latest episode of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha took a very unexpected turn. By the end of this episode, things became very hopeful, very doubtful and very uncertain. Read more…

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha ep8: what is easily given, is easily taken (back)

I am really enjoy Maoyuu Maou Yuusha on a basic level. And when I say that, I mean I enjoy just watching despite any criticisms. And even better, I enjoy it the most when I can’t muster anything to complain about, like this episode. Read more…

Binbougami ga! ep3: your morals are sh*t!

Episode 2

I would say that Sakura Ichiko has become morally bankrupt piece of crap in my eyes, but that would prove that I haven’t been paying attention.  She’s what we imagine when the words “one percent” are uttered. She’s the epitome of the female women love to hate because of her good fortune and demeanor.  You could even say that she’s a guy’s worst nightmare and their natural predator, because as this episode helps demonstrate, she won’t hesitate to use a man for her aims.  And if that doesn’t work, she’d just as easily toss them away.  But with all that said, she somehow manages to skirt by by the fact that she’s actually not a horrible person.  Something deep down keeps saving her.  A horrible memory, a sense of obligation, or a small shriveled up conscience.  Sakura’s soul camps outside the gates of hell, resisting the void via the tug of a tiny string… and her massive surplus of good fortune. Maoyuu Maou Yuusha ep7: I’m sorry, but how is she the only person in the world with this information?

Episode 6

I usually come off in a negative tone when I start a conversation with a question. And it’s not the preschool crap that announcers say at the end of episodes.

“Will Domon survive the attack?”

“Can Kirby float to the other side of that moat?”

“Did the butler really do it?”

The answers are yes (he’s the star of the f*cking show); yes (Kirby can float forever, just like he can suck infinity); and yes (the butler always does it, but usually with the help of the slutty/greedy maid). What I really want to know is how the world of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha is so prehistoric and backwards that it hasn’t figured out basic agricultural and navigational techniques and devices, but it can have this sophisticated economic system based on war? And don’t give me that crap about basic medieval serfdom and the intervention of magic either. This Demon King chick is either a damn time traveler or she has help.

Oreshura ep6: how to inspire your harem in under 30 minutes

Episode 5

The Adventures of Burning Pudding Princess, or The Hall Monitors’ Manifesto! …just a couple of titles I was mulling over for this post. OreShura appears to be rapidly expanding its cast right now. And I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. And on initial impression, the same may apply to this episode.

I’ve openly criticized and lauded OreShura for being what it is. It has over-the-top, forced comedy and drama. And it can either work or turn me off terribly because of that. There isn’t much in this show I can attach the words “nuance” and “subtlety” to for this series. So I watched most of this episode with a tilt head (curiousity). Read more…

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha ep6: in war, blood is the only real currency

Episode 5

I usually am careful what I ask for. A motto I like to live by is: be careful what you ask for, you just might get it. And that is because when people ask for something, when people demand things, they rarely take into account what it takes to get it. It’s a lesson popularly told in stories dealing with genies, or other apparitions that like to grant wishes. Often it’s not just about producing things out of thin air. It’s about commandeering resources from one group or place, and giving them to someone, or someplace else. I find this applies not just to me as I watch, but it applies to the characters in this story as well. The people of the Winter Kingdom want victory, peace and independence. But I’m not sure more of the populace even fathoms what even a fraction of that costs. And Demon King/Crimson Scholar wants something even beyond that. And though I’m sure she’s done her calculations, I’m not sure she’s fully prepared for what comes with its cost. Read more…

OreShura ep5: a badass medical drama is just around the corner

Episode 4

You had to wonder at the end of episode four how Eita was gonna handle the love letter in his foot locker. Standard Harem Operating Procedure (SHOP) dictates that when a third member of the harem is introduced, it’s done awkwardly and with great misunderstanding. Actually, that’s how every girl appears to the male protagonist. And I was greatly looking forward to seeing how this eventual misunderstanding would further screw with Eita’s life. But first, he has Masuzu and Chiwa’s substantial problems to deal with first. Read more…

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha ep3: you’re gonna need to tart it up!

Episode 2

Well it looks like Demon King has made the most of six months of down time and a hard winter. The sleepy little village she’s adopted is flourishing thanks to agricultural strategies. And now she has to consider her next steps. Building a network of influence based on this meager living, and getting in Hero’s pants. I can dig it! Read more…

OreShura ep2: So Dirty

Episode 1

I could not be more pleased with a show that has heart. Something that tugs at your heart strings, a series that warms up your insides and turns your hard emotions into jelly. You know, something that makes you root for a character trying to make their way. Right now, OreShura does not have that. Matter of fact, it’s looking like it wants to quite heartless.  And maybe I’m okay with that. Read more…
