Gargantia ep6: comes alive!

May 13, 2013 3 comments

I haven’t really loved Gargantia up to this point. It’s beautiful, well written, has a wonderful concept and execution and decent characters. So what’s the problem. The show was just content to be itself. Its main character had no personality or motivation. And the show was just content to slowly pull Ledo out of his shell and teach him about the world. He was as much machine as Chamber. So what’s my point, this episode seeks to correct that. For me to feel passion for a show, the show has to show passion for itself. I think that’s what’s happened with this episode. Read more…

Majestic Prince ep6: the Fail Five lives on

So what do you do once you’ve done the impossible?  Go back home and get sh*t on by your classmates, while the adults in your life squabble over your worth.  Such is the punishingly realistic life of the MJP. Read more…

Majestic Prince ep5: setting a bad example is better than having none at all.

Episode 4

Here we are at the fifth episode for the first of several series I’m watching this season.  Majestic Prince is a show I mainly started watching only because of two factors, the character designer.  Hisashi Hirai, love him or hate him, has a signature style that can’t be missed. And it’s been a staple in anime for over ten years. And also, I’m a pretty big mecha fan, especially Gundam.  Hirai is probably most famous for doing the character designs for Gundam SEED (though my favorite work of his is probably s-CRY-ed), so this title doesn’t have a whole lot going for it, but I’m intensely attracted to what it’s got.  As for the actual show, and whether it’s been a fun ride, that’s a complete separate issue.  Though it may not be one short on high points. Majestic Prince ep4: someone to hold, someone to strangle

Episode 3

I definitely prefer it when a show tells me a story clearly and in a linear fashion. A few flashbacks are acceptable, but they need to be clearly differentiated. Last episode ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. This episode starts on a flashback. Alright Majestic Prince, let’s not try to be Eva here.  Anyway, there are far worse things in this episode to hate.  And definitely more appears in this episode to enjoy, and even think about. Majestic Prince ep3: how do you suck at vacation?

April 21, 2013 1 comment

Normally, I would make comments about how a show continues to impress me, or how it has had the shine quickly knocked off of it after the third episode.  Majestic Prince has managed to impress me (a little) while having the shine knocked right off of it long ago.  Three episodes in, and this show is already in full depression mode. Majestic Prince ep2: from rock star to not star in under a minute

I have seen a lot of disappointing and underwhelming second episodes.  Usually what happens is that the show goes nuts in the first episode, and then tries to make you actually care about the world in the second.  Lots of dialogue, exposition that usually involves itself with explaining what happened in the first episode, and it can often be a complete departure when it comes to the tone of the previous episode.  Usually this is a big turn-off for me.

Yeah.  Majestic Prince, are you listening? Read more…

Check-in Station: Majestic Prince ep1 (I admire your temerity… or is it stupidity?)

Part three of my attempt to check out as much anime from this Spring season as possible, I’m watching Majestic Prince.  The first of I believe three mecha series airing this season.  My attempt to closely follow three mecha series at once is absolutely doomed even as I take my first baby steps into doing it.  Which is why I’m kinda hoping one of these series is garbage.  It’s a horrible thought I know, but it’s a better alternative than having to leave an excellent series behind.  Also, it’s far more likely that one or more of these mecha are going to suck.  They’re complete unknowns.  And on first impressions I had my fair share of doubts about this series in particular, but let’s see if my prejudices about this being a goofy, unfunny mecha actually hold up past a viewing of a preview, and into the viewing of the first episode. Check-out Station: OreShura eps12 & 13 (Love is a battlefield – and so is your face!)

Episode 11

There are many things I’ve said I will never do again.  Things like putting soy sauce on rice; watch a Neon Genesis Evangelion dub; renting from a black landlord (I don’t give a sh*t if you call me racist or not); becoming a born again Christian; joining the ****; mixing light and dark rums (GEEZUS, that was a terrible experience); and being friends with females.

Some of these are easy. Don’t put the soy sauce on the rice. You can only join the **** once, kinda. Unless the people who made the DVD/Blu-ray are complete a-holes then the disc for EVA should always be set to subs first.

While others are not so easy to keep, especially the not being friends with females thing.  It’s like a curse.  Some guys have shallow, sex filled relationships with women by the dozens.  I have rich fulfilling relationships with women that involve lots of talking and confiding and giving advice.  But NO sex.  I repeat, NONE.  Not an ounce.  Now if I was in anime like OreShura, I suppose that wouldn’t be a problem.  Because someone as lame as me would have women falling all over him.  This show…  Wow.  This show is a lesson in how it is IMPOSSIBLE to be casual friends with females.  The love is too deep.

Screw you Oreshura.  Screw.  You. Read more…

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha ep9: you are nothing before a powerless insect

Episode 8

If a plan goes wrong, it should go spectacularly wrong! For if it doesn’t, what’s the point? And at the very least, the spectacle can erase the sin of your mistake.

Yeah, this latest episode of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha took a very unexpected turn. By the end of this episode, things became very hopeful, very doubtful and very uncertain. Read more…

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha ep8: what is easily given, is easily taken (back)

March 1, 2013 1 comment

I am really enjoy Maoyuu Maou Yuusha on a basic level. And when I say that, I mean I enjoy just watching despite any criticisms. And even better, I enjoy it the most when I can’t muster anything to complain about, like this episode. Read more…
