Check-out Station: Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova!

What a pleasant trip this has been. I’ve gone from just looking at previews for this show and thinking it merely an interesting concept that’s doomed to suck, to one of my favorite shows of 2013. Read more…

Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova ep11 (sororicide)

I am consistently impressed by this show’s ability to make ship to ship combat engaging and emotional.  I’m more impressed at this show’s ability to not waste emotion. Read more…

Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova ep10 (selfless self sacrifice)

What an outstanding, yet subdued episode. With the 401 all but dead, and Chihaya figuratively and literally in the same boat. What we get is the eventual countdown to Chihaya’s death. With Iona being an alien machine of the highest order, it’s easy to see that her survival and escape would be easy enough without her captain, but that obviously isn’t an easy choice to make. It’s the hardest choice. And admirably she doesn’t ever accept it. Read more…

Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova ep9 (a triumph and failure of emotions)

This is crazy!  This show just keeps getting better and better.  I’m clearly looking at one of the best shows of the season, and possibly a contender for one of the best mecha shows of the year. Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova is showing that it’s more than pretty girls and firepower.  It’s a smart well rounded show that’s asking all the right questions. Read more…

Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova eps7 & 8: I’m sorry, you have a bad case of humanity

I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve mistakenly dipped my toe into harem waters with this oceanic anime.  But more importantly, I think I’m starting to grasp the “point” of this anime.  It’s an old and tested one for any fan of scifi.  But it’s not like this anime’s universe has anime, nor have the Fog scene any scifi.  So it will be interesting to see how these “mental models” handle being more human. Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova ep6 (children and emotions do NOT belong on the battlefield!)

Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova

Episode 6

Well this episode was a little frustrating. And to say it was slow would be very accurate. Despite all the soldiers and tanks and gunfire, this episode added up to some bad decisions and wasted time.  What a way to start for this series when I’d finally given it the spotlight. Read more…

AniFriday pt3 (November 8th 2013)

November 7, 2013 5 comments

I’m expanding AniFridays and making a few changes as well.  Ars Nova will get the weekly single blog post treatment from now on (hope I don’t regret that), while Valvrave is now joining the AniFriday group.  Also I’m adding Hajime no Ippo: Rising and Gundam Build Fighters (since people keep asking me if I’m watching it) to the group as well.  Hope you guys enjoy.

This week’s anime in order of appearance.

  • Valvrave ep16
  • Tokyo Ravens ep5
  • Ms. MONOCHROME ep6
  • Coppelion ep6
  • Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova ep5

AniFriday pt2 (Tokyo Ravens & Blue Steel ep4; Ms. MONOCHROME & Coppelion ep5)

I’ve learned that I need to stop giving myself deadlines.  I need to stop worrying about crappy CG.  And I need to stop naming these posts after days of the week; it really exposes how easily my schedule is ruined. Read more…

AniFriday: (because keeping schedules is for NERDS!)

October 25, 2013 2 comments

This was originally supposed to be AniWednesday, then I started playing the video games and it became AniThursday, then I remembered I had stuff to do and work, so now it’s AniFriday.  It’s a good thing that I’m flexible about my own scheduling.

Anyway, this week I’m covering the more and more interesting to watch Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova.  I’m blandly watching BlazBlue as it continues to do stuff while not caring if I know what or why it’s doing it.  Ms. MONOCHROME makes me wish I still had a budget for anime swag.  Tokyo Ravens makes me fondly remember something I now hate.  And Coppelion does it’s best to be the most dramatic, intense thing ever made (it is totally none of that).  AniFriday!  Let’s go! AniWednesday: Ms. MONOCHROME ep3, and ep2 of Coppelion, Tokyo Ravens, BlazBlue and Ars Nova

Alright, for the second time, I’m gonna try this little experiment where I test out anime I have less of an interest in, and give my thoughts.  So far, this feels good.  If this continues until the fifth or sixth week of Fall airings, then I may be able to pare down some anime while I’m at it, too.
