Tokyo Ghoul ep8: why don’t you understand?!

November 3, 2014 Leave a comment

I’ve never been a huge fan of justice.  It’s not to say I don’t feel that those who break the law shouldn’t be punished, nor do I feel divine retribution or karma are wasted hopes and dreams for the weak.  I just have come to the understanding that justice is relative.  Just as good or evil can be a matter of perspective and circumstance, so can a person, culture or society’s views on punishment and retribution.  I’m not telling you that the person who bombed a bus a bus of civilians or shot up a school or mall is in the right, or should get off without issue.  It’s just that when you see a horrific action, it should be the burden of those who witness it to think about why it occurred.  What is for the other side a demand for justice may have been the very thing that spurned that action forth.  If you don’t think about how you contribute to the cycle, and where you are in it, then there’s no way to figure out how to stop it. Terraformars OVA

An interesting sci-fi idea, and another example of entertainment attempting to scare us with the infinite possibilities of science and nature.  And you know what?  It’s done often because it works and it’s effective at drilling doubt and fear into our minds towards everyday things.  I’d like to believe that this show can in the end do the same.  I want as much fear out of this as excitement.

OK, from what I’ve gathered Read more…

AniFriday Issue #25 – Autumn Manga Special pt1: Hajime no Ippo

October 29, 2014 Leave a comment

It’s been quite a while since I last talked about Hajime no Ippo in length.  And quite happening to be revisiting a discussion about this series in chunks.  It allows for a clearer, elongated perspective where I get to notice trends and not get so distracted by the moment to moment set ups of each chapter.  This post will be covering the final chapters of Ippo’s fight with Alredo Gonzales, the current #1 contender for the flyweight championship of the world, and the only man standing between Ippo and his ultimate goal of the world champ, Ricardo Martinez.  However, I’ll be talking about this fight as a whole at the end, from chapter 1030 to 1071.

I’m so hyped for Ippo!  God, I love this manga! Read more…

Check-in Station: Zankyou no Terror ep1 (I wouldn’t have jumped)

Not bad at all.  Though it’s very early in the story line, I see elements that I really do like.  It’s a positive all around.

Looking at the teaser for this story, it sounds pretentious as hell.  Two kids with a tragic past and numbers for names are sent to put the world on tilt.  They do something horrible and the rest of the world is left to put together the mystery.  “YAWN!”  Yawn I say!  Nothing at all draws me in about that.  But in execution, this show works for me.

Check-in Station: Ao Haru Ride ep1 (now’s not a good time)

What a cute show.  I immediately knew I was dealing with one of those standard awkward shoujo romance shows.  From jump, all the tells were there, and the set-up seemed really familiar.  Girl and guy clearly care for each other, but circumstances and real life bullsh*t keep them apart.  Futaba is a girl who had looks and personality going for her in middle school, but was ostracized by her fellow female students because of those traits and the attention she got from boys.  The saving grace from that life of loneliness was the budding romance she was having with a boy named Kou Tanaka.  But because of crap that happened that we probably won’t learn anything about until the last episode, they never got together or saw each other again – until three years later. Check-in Station: Akame ga Kill ep1 (finally something I can be genuinely excited about!)

Oh my!  The violence!  All the violence!  And the murder!  And the choreographed fights and quick and bloody jump cuts that make all of it so much more exciting!  I know I sound like a monster, but I’m actually just excited to watch a show , or at least one episode, that just wants to entertain and do stuff more than it wants to talk, feed exposition or give a lesson.  There’s also the problem I have after watching years and years of Gundam.  I’m pretty sick of the lead hero being in combat situations and then b*tching about conflict and killing.  And that’s even when they’re protecting people.  Ugh!  This is turning more into cross examination of heroes and hypocrisy.  I need to just focus on how happy I am with this episode. Check-in Station: Aldnoah Zero ep1 (grow a personality)

Oh f*ck me!  Another military mecha show?  I already watched one of those this season!  Please Aldnoah Zero!  Show me that you have some personality or uniqueness!  I’m not even going to fathom watching more than one bland, uninspired mecha at a time.  If so, you better plop down that Gundam name on the desk. Check-in Station: Tokyo Ghoul ep1 (more intimacy than any man could want)

I can’t easily remember the last time I watched something that was scary, gross enough to make me not want to eat while watching, and that I liked all in one sitting. I suppose Blood-C was the last thing I watched for a decent amount of time that was gross. Though it rarely tried to scare. This show’s first episode had some build up and play to it. Now whether or not it continues to do that, or it becomes some sort of supernatural battle show, I can’t guess.  I’ll just say there was a decent chance for this show to satisfy. Read more…

Check-in Station: Glasslip ep1 (I came for the animation; I stayed for the cocks)

What a beautiful place.  What spectacular fireworks.  What bright-eyed, simple and happy people.  Look at all this nostalgia dripping from every panel as the joys of a summer festival wash over all- HEY!  There’s a guy over there not smiling!  He’s not partaking in any of the summer festivities!  He’s not bright-eyed at all, he looks rather menacing and dour!  The spectacular fireworks *gasp* – have no effect.  He’s not stopping to enjoy this beautiful place!  He must be an enemy!  Everyone frown!  He’s getting too close to and familiar with our most naive, bright-eyed and simple character! Check-in Station: Argevollen ep1 (I’m super hyped for this sandwich I’m eating while watching this anime)

I was getting a very distinct 08th MS Team vibe from this show in the beginning, and by the end that was an idea that didn’t have long to live. But perhaps that isn’t such a bad thing. I just can’t seem to avoid these military mech shows. Read more…
